Q can only mean ...........................Quimper

The subject of this weeks Alphabe-Thursday assignment is the letter Q and for me that can only mean Quimper pottery, a tin glazed earthenware which has been produced in western Brittany, France for over 300 years.
An assortment of Quimper cheese dishes.
Many of you will know that I also manage the blog for the Quimper Club International .

I am blogging over there this month as part of my duties as co-organiser of this years Annual Meeting October 24 -27 in Savannah, GA.
We are thrilled to have the renowned Breton artist Philippe Lalys as one of our guest speakers at the meeting, the collage below is of some of his wonderful pieces.

But this post is all about the pottery not the meeting, so for your delectation a selection of Quimper eye candy.

The croisille decor is one of my favourite border designs.

I know, it's all gorgeous isn't it?

Or maybe it isn't your cup of tea? Either way I'd love to hear from you. If you love it or hate it, leave me a comment so I'll know.

Now scoot over to Mrs Matlock's class and hand in your homework or you'll get a detention!

  2. Q is for Quimper . . . well, YES! And look at you, getting your assignment in early, Ms. M. I'll be featuring Q this week as well, but I've added a few more of my favorite Q items. Of course I'll be scooting into class just as the bell rings. You know me, I'm rarely early. :-)
Wishing you a beautiful day in Normandy! Hugs ~ Sarah

  4. I've loved it, ever since seeing a piece for the first time, about 35 years ago. I've never bought a single piece, though, having decided that I'd only do so in Quimper. That was an easy thing to say when we lived in Europe, off and on, but it's been years and I never managed to get there. So........I'll just enjoy your great photos!

  9. Oh I love Quimper! My parents had tons of it(or so it seemed) when I was young. We never really paid attention to it: I thought it was just so...old fashioned. And then, of course, most of it broke over the years, and my Mother never replaced it, and of course, now it is so....expensive that she can't possibly buy the real thing.. I have two lovely mugs but rarely use them.
    Thanks for posting this!

    Best wishes,
    Natasha.

  12. I told Sarah that I wondered how many people would use Quimper for their post. I think it's beautiful, but was not familiar with it until I met Debbie at Confessions of a Plate Addict. Great choice for Q! How fun that you get to travel to Savannah for your meeting, one of the places that I want to visit. Kathy

  19. Well, until today, I don't even think I was aware of the existence of Quimper. It is quite delightful, really, but I won't become a devotee....at 65. having lost my job in massive budget cuts over a year ago, I am being forced to downsize and look for smaller living space!!!

  29. I don't own one piece, Maggie, but am utterly charmed. There was a store called Mole Hole that used to carry so much of it; I was always tempted but then my majolica collection was well under way and just how many collections can we have? But I have always loved Quimper.

  31. How did I not even know about this?! I believe I saw some other lovely pictures in another post (Sarah's) as well. It's beautiful. I especially like the plate with the large bright flowers. But it is all pretty. Laly's pieces are definitely works of art. That's neat that you manage the Quimper Club International blog. I'm going to go check it out. Thanks for the nice post.

  33. Thanks for visiting my blog. My daughter Heidi posted a comment about hugging the Statue of Liberty if you'd like to come back and see.
My husband's aunt collected one of these patterns, and that's when I fell in love. I just can't seem to get myself over to France again to enjoy it in person. Maybe someday!
