Five on Friday - Works of Art

This week for Amy's Five on Friday meme I'd like to share with you four paintings and a church altar statue carved from wood that dates to the early 1700's.
They are just some of the beautiful works of art which made me catch my breath and stop to stare in wonder during our visit to the Hungarian National Gallery (Magyar Nemzeti Galéria), Budapest in May.
#1
I'm calling this "sorting apples " because foolishly I didn't make a note of the artists name (I think he was Hungarian) or the title of the painting.

The young woman appears to be tired but also resigned to her task as the man staggers in with yet more apples to sort.

#2
Giovanni Antonia Canal (Canaletto) "The Lock at Dolo" 1763

#3
Tiziano Vecellio (Titian) "Virgin and Child with Saint Paul" ca 1540.

I could have looked at this picture all afternoon.

# 4.
Csok Istvan "Do this in Memory of Me" 1890.

I like to study how artists paint the hands of their subjects, this young girls hands clutching the scarf fascinated me.

#5.
Early 18th c Hungarian Sculpture. "Saint Notburga"

Once again I was attracted to the hands, the right one was badly damaged but the left has remained virtually unscathed.
I couldn't help but think of all the prayers she had listened to over the centuries, or wonder how many had been answered.

  1. These are beautiful and I'm glad you shared whether you knew the artist's name or not. I really love the first two. Wonder what they were going to do with the apples. Some sort of seasonal gathering?

Hope you are having a great summer, Maggie!

  2. What great choices. I love the way artists depict fabric, so your close-up of the hands was a treat for me.

  3. A great five, the first picture is lovely if a bit sad. I have never seen Jesus depicted as a plump, bouncy child before - what a fabulous painting! Those hands seem a bit anxious to me - I wonder if she has had bad news?! Have a bon weekend xx

  4. I wonder what she was thinking while she was clutching the scarf, her face tells many tales. Love the apple picture...

  5. A great five, I was drawn to the woman sorting apples for some reason but I couldn't tell you why. Have a wonderful weekend.

  6. I can see how you could linger over each one of these, they are all beautiful and full of expression and story. I particularly like Do This in Memory of Me … it might be the dresses or the lace or the table … and it seems to be all women partaking.

  13. Beautiful works of art, Maggie. I can see why they would appeal to you. The apple sorting reminds me of my childhood when we would get a big box of apples in the fall and sometimes laid them all out on newspaper to keep them for the winter.
The women's clothing in Do This in Memory of Me is so intricately painted. The hands do tell a story, don't they?

  14. The first one is my favorite, the way the light falls. I always look at hands too because they are so hard to do.

  20. All five are beautiful. I particularly like the way the big frames give you the impression of looking in through a window - especially in that first one.

  22. Thank you for sharing. I think my favourite would be the top one with the girl sorting the apples. I like how the artist has captured her weary expression.

  24. I actually like the second photo the best. Your post made me think of my late mother who loved to paint and art. She probably would have been studying how they did the hands as well. Thank you for sharing.

  26. Thanks for sharing the beautiful art pieces, Maggie. I found myself focused on the light the artists created in the paintings...how my eyes were drawn to the man lugging the basket, the building on the canal, the virgin and child, and the girl in white. I admire the amazing creativity!

  28. Hi Maggie! Sorry I'm late! Was quite a busy holiday weekend here in the States. I still wanted to say hi and see your offerings for Friday's 5 - and I"m so glad I did as the artwork you've shared is amazing!! I'm with you and with many pieces like this I could stare forever. I was blessed to visit the Vatican museum many years ago and there were frescos there that I literally sat down and just gazed at for a long time. The guard there thought I was pretty funny, but I didn't care. I love breathtaking beauty at the hands of artists like this. I completely understand the fascination with the hands too!
Blessings on the rest of your week dear Gal. xoxo
