Ring Out The Old, Ring In The New.

In a secluded corner of the garden a pink hydrangea from last summer
continues to add colour, whilst bright yellow daffodils begin to push through to the light.

Ring Out The Old, Ring In The New
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more,
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.
Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.
Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out thy mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease,
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.
Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.
Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

  9. This poem reminds me of New years Eve when i was a child growing up very close to downtown Victoria. i remember listening to all the church bells ring at midnight. All the best to you for the new Year Maggie! It looks like your garden has made a wonderful start - just imagine seeing those lovely flowers on New Year's Day! That's what I'm doing now...

  10. Gosh Maggie, another year under our belts and still we keep going, blogging and adventuring, hoping and wishing...............what fortunate lives we lead.

    Now another year is ahead, full of promise and good times., if only people will try. My prayer is that the world will become a more peaceful place, for battered, hungry and hurt people, and for ill-treated animals. Governments are a disgrace, legislators dishonest, poachers wicked (I've been hearing about the horrendous ivory poaching and killing of several thousand elephants just this year) - seems the more we spend to educate, the worse humankind behaves.

    However, I will pray that 2012 is better in every way - and I'm sending love and very best wishes that you and your dear ones stay healthy, enjoy happiness, and find prosperity in all they do.

    Much love, Mary

  12. Do you really have daffodils already? It's been so warm here this winter, mine are peeking through the ground, but that's not a good thing because the coldest bitter parts of winter are yet to come in January & February.
    Happy New Year.

  13. Happy New Year! I found you through the comment you left on Mary's blog about the mosaic tray I made for her.

    I spent a few days in Normandy a few years ago and loved it. Wish I could have spent more time there.
