How to enhance a building site.

Bonjour from my Normandy garden.

this hard working honey bee just adores a yellow iris or two
This week the driveway in front of the house was turned into a building site/danger zone as men and machines dug holes and created trenches in a quest to redesign our drainage system to comply with recent changes to the regulations concerning fosse toutes eaux.

To get away from the noise and the mess I escaped to my potager, behind the house, where I am in the process of creating a new herb garden.
(Thyme; lemon thyme; chives; basil; rosemary; parsley and coriander are all thriving well and just as soon as it stops raining this weekend I plan on taking photographs to share).
Back to Tuesday - so involved was I with those bunches of sweet smelling herbage that I mis-stepped, lost my footing and fell backwards landing heavily on the wooden fence enclosing the vegetable bed behind me.
Luckily no broken bones but my derriere has a humongous bruise which bears an uncanny resemblance to a map of the world, (or so I'm told!)
Proverbs 16:18 KJV
"Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall".

That'll teach me to watch my step.

A couple of days later I was mobile again and in need of some plant therapy so off we went to the garden centre for geraniums and a few more herbs.
An idea I brought back from our recent trip to Greece is to add a small pot of fragrant thyme or rosemary to the table when dining al fresco, simple yet stylish.
(Note to self: go on internet, search for small terracotta pots).

As a tribute to my many friends who live in Texas I added a pack of 6 "Tex Mex Hot Pink" simple geraniums to my cart.

Ever the pragmatist the SP found a convenient platform to unload the plants onto when we got back home again. Now that's a much better use of a digger, n'est pas?

Not to be outdone by the red hat gals, my blush pink roses continue to gracefully adorn the old stone walls.

Their delicate perfume scents the air returning our home to beauty after all the turmoil of the past five days.

  1. Oh Maggie, I hope your bruising is healing well. My husband took a tumble over an old stair rail we have on our riverbank slope....chasing Canadian geese (they are dirty and nasty and NOT welcome in on our city property!). He still has two pretty large hematomas (the one near the ankle the worst due to standing pressure). And I just got over a terrible case of poison something from the garden...in my eye. All for the gardens/landscape to look good. I must say, your flower samplings are gorgeous. I can almost smell the roses!. Have a good week.

  2. Glad your fall was nothing serious. Your geraniums make a lovely splash of colour, but those beautiful pink roses get my points. We've had a few storms and it's bashed my climbing roses to bits. Mr France went to the rescue and had to snip off 55 rose hips. I've rescued some of the petals & I have a few bowls of sweat smelling dried petals around the house.

  3. Beautiful blooms. I love geraniums but they don't last very long here because of the heat and dust. So sorry to hear about your fall but glad to know it wasn't worse. Take care, Tammy

  4. Oh Maggie, I'm sorry to read about your fall. Hope the bruising is fading to continent size rather than the whole world! Your herb garden sounds delightful. Are you still trying to sell your home there? Sounds like you are continuing to improve it.
Gorgeous old roses. I can just imagine their scent.
I just got back from our trip and I wanted to tell you that I'll be looking at the link you sent about your home. I only had my phone on holiday and some things just didn't work well. Have a good week.

  6. I hope this finds you feeling better, Maggie...I know how preoccupied we garden lovers can be. I noticed bruises on my arms the other day and I know it must be from carrying heavy pots and tools from here to there. I need a wagon! Feel better soon.

Your roses are glorious! They remind me of peonies with all of those intricate paper thin layers. I love that you have the potted herbs and vases on the table, that's a very good idea. All the plants around here are on sale and that would be a great way to use up extra pots and potting soil!

    Take care, my friend.

  8. Such wonderful flowers! Your pink roses are gorgeous, and it's always special to see honeysuckles. Very few of them could survive here where I live.
    Have a lovely week!

  9. Oh, Maggie! Sorry to hear about your fall. Seems to me like it gets easier to miss-step with each passing year. UGH. And, I don't look particularly good in those shades of purple and green! Your garden is beautiful. So many different colors. I love geraniums and herbs. And your roses!!! Wow! Happy Monday. Have a lovely week.

  10. I'm so sorry that you fell, too. I am just getting healed from falling on my face and know now how much damage you can do by falling. Take care of yourself my friend. I love those ruffly pink roses. I have a pink rose post for tomorrow. They are so beautiful. Enjoy your day. Hugs, Diane

  12. Glad your fall wasn't worse Maggie, although I'm sure it must be painful to sit down on your bruised map.
Flowers and herbs are the best medicine and I would have gone out to buy something new to feel better. Great idea for al fresco dining to have a potted scented herb on the table.
Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday, be well!

  13. I love the idea of plant therapy! It's all so beautiful and I can imagine it smells gorgeous. So much to love in your wonderful photos and I'll be eager to see the potager.

Now, about that fall -- do take care. It has to hurt a good deal and while I suppose it could have been worse, it certainly wasn't fun. Be careful out there, my friend!

  17. I love your geraniums and roses. Geraniums and pansies are two of my favourite flowers. But it is already past time to purchase bedding plants here. At least in smaller shops in the neighbourhood. I can get some if I want to go further afield and I may have to to finish planting. It sounds like you have a lot of work and gardening ahead of you. Bet wishes with it all.

  18. At our age, falling just is not acceptable. I do try to stay upright, but as I told a lady the other day in a hospital emergency room, we are just one step from a fall. (I was fine, no emergency for me.) I do hope you are on the mend. How dreadful to have such work going on. Plant therapy, though, certainly does sooth the soul. Stay upright, my friend.

  20. I am so sorry for your fall... No fun even if you can laugh about it now. You arranged your flowers so beautifully by color. Love them all, but yellow ones are always special to me ... Like little spots of sunshine on the garden!
